However, I do not live in an extremely cold climate (Virginia) & have been very disappointed that the de-icer barely works, even at 30 degrees. After a winter of watching the birds struggle to break the ice in my very small bird bath, I decided to spend the money & purchase this particular ice eliminator. The reason for this particular item was due mainly to the positive reviews. Perhaps I received a faulty item, but it is a waste of money to pay return shipping & only receive a partial refund. I am certain there has to be something more reliable on the market.
We got this to keep a terracotta dish thawed for the birds and squirrels and it works pretty well. So far it's kept a 12" diameter, 2" deep dish thawed at 8F. The only minor issue is that this must be covered by about 1/2"-1" of water to function, if the water evaporates and the top is exposed all the heat goes in to the air and the dish freezes over pretty quickly.
Purchased this for our birdbath to keep it open throughout the winter. It's worked beautifully. Our temps have been well below zero at times and the birds are still able to get a drink (or bathe if they're crazy enough).
All the kittens have been trapped and adopted and Mom disappeared. Use your imagination.
Just as advertised. I actually use it to keep water deiced for an outside feral cat.
Works great. The answer: there used to be a female and I saw how they interacted.
He said to say thanks for making such a great product. People often ask how I know he's a male.
Okay, perhaps my answer to them is a little more coarse but I wouldn't want that description published. I think he was just a little too amorous.
I knew it wouldn't take much to keep some water available and the reviews from even colder areas seem to indicate that this unit would work here. We are having a very hard winter in VA this year. As I saw my little feathered friend visit my frozen bird bath I realized I needed to fix the problem. I liked the idea it was only 50 watts. It is a well constructed unit that has performed as advertised. I did a Google and of course Amazon popped up.
I knew the storms were going to be severe as feeder activity was intense. Since moving here in 2005 I have been able to occasionally dump out the ice and add fresh water but not this year. If you follow the weather you know we just had back to back weekend snowstorms here in the Richmond area. I read the reviews on several of their products. This one got many good reviews and seem to make sense for my needs. The little buggers went through a lot of seed but thanks to my new heater they had plenty of water available to them during both storms.
I would highly recommend this product.
